What I’ve been thinking about recently

The world keeps turning. The sun rises and it sets. The leaves change in autumn and grow back in spring.

I chose to study history because I was fascinated by how people, countries, societies, and cultures change. They evolve to meet the needs of their current realities. Bridges get built and then torn down years later. Collesums are erected and then eroded by nature. Empires spread and then get destroyed (still thinking about you Ottoman Empire). Countries get colonized and decolonized. Olive trees that existed for decades are burned down and will one day grow back.

Ancient Greek Stadium of Magnesia, presently located in Turkey

We keep pushing and pulling against the tides of time, hoping we will win each time. That something will outlive us. And sometimes they do. I doubt Athenians thought their legacy of democracy would live on for centuries (though its legacy is questionable).

Sometimes when I walk through buildings or historical places, I imagine what it would have been like centuries before. Was there another girl wondering the same? I like to think so. What would have these streets looked like if this country had never been colonized?

All this is to say that nothing ever stays the same.

Not historically, not personally, not ever really.

Super short newsletter today but while you’re here, please consider donating to these families and individuals through Operation Olive Branch. At a certain point, we are individually responsible for making change. Our governments may spend hours “debating” over pointless topics and leave what matters out, but we cannot and should not.

They are in desperate need of evacuation from Palestine and support for their families:
