It's quarter 2 besties
If you don't plan, you plan to fail
I used to make resolutions for my year thinking they would last, but I would forget about them as soon as we got to March.
Resolutions are goals that are sent to die (not to be dramatic or anything).
Instead, I split my year into quarters (like I’m a multi-billion dollar corporation ofc) and make short-term goals. And guess what? Quarter 2 just started. Here’s everything I do and did to prepare:
Quarter 1
Prep for quarter 2 starts in quarter 1. I talked about how I set myself up at the start of the year in one of my first editions of this newsletter. Check it out here.
I create a document for each quarter where I list out my goals for that period within certain categories. My categories include fitness, health, work, education, and personal. You can use whatever categories make the most sense for your life! Then create several goals within each category that are specific. Use my template to get started.
Then I take it a step further and list what habits and routines will help me achieve those goals. This helps you reflect on how these goals are going to fit into your day-to-day life.
Once this is done, you get into action. But come back and reflect at the end of each month. Reflection is what makes this process more effective than just plain old resolutions. Ask yourself these questions:
How did I do compared to my goals?
What did I do well this month?
What could I improve upon next month?
Do these goals still align with what I want?
With resolutions, you aren’t checking in on them regularly. Creating a plan for your quarter means you have to come back and make updates. Sometimes the plan we think will be most effective doesn’t pan out. This just means that we have to adjust our course of action.
Why this works
I’m not a behavior psychologist or an expert in any way, but I do know what works for me. This works for me because it allows for change and shifts. Resolutions are so do or die, and I am not a do-or-die person.
Giving yourself grace for change is important. You might have wanted to run a marathon on December 31st, but if by March you realize it might not be doable this year, that is ok. That’s when you shift your goals. Your goals are supposed to work for you, not the other way around.
More than that, resolutions are not just for the start of the year. You can start over at any point. You don’t need to wait for the magical ball drop to start creating the life you want. You can start right now (after you finish reading and subscribing to this newsletter tho).
April can be the start of your year if you want it to be.
