Quotes and poems on my mind

I can’t put my thoughts together long enough to write an entire newsletter edition, so I will be sharing other people’s writing this week.

My love for writing began with the writing that I read so this is hopefully going to inspire me.

Love arrives exactly when love is supposed to, and love leaves exactly when love must. When love arrives, say, “Welcome. Make yourself comfortable.” If love leaves, ask her to leave the door open behind her. Turn off the music, listen to the quiet, whisper, “Thank you. Thank you for stopping by.”

Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye

This is a spoken word poem that I came across in high school. I’ve listened to almost every spoken word poem that Sarah Kay has performed because her words are just so thoughtfully chosen. In a TED talk, she once explained that writing helps her figure things out and she made me realize it did the same for me. Love spoken word poetry!! Adds a beauty that can’t be captured on the page.

The poem she performed in that TED talk was called Point B and here’s my favorite portion of it:

She's going to learn that this life will hit you hard in the face, wait for you to get back up just so it can kick you in the stomach. But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.

Sarah Kay

This quote reminded me that being perfect isn’t part of being human, but being generous, true, and empathetic is.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

I had a Robert Frost phase…and I think we all should. This was also the poem I chose for Poem in Your Pocket Day. It was my favorite day of the whole elementary school year!

Yes, exactly Emily.

This one felt timely. Life sucks sometimes, badly. Life is brutal and offers no forgiveness. It is finite and yet so beautiful. I love life to the moon, but it hurts.

One promise I made to myself was that I would not lose myself to another person again. And I will stand by that as much as I can!

I will leave you with this final quote because this is exactly how my journey to this point in my life has felt. Day by day the sun gets brighter and the small moments become most important. I learned to love my life, even when it sucks and especially when it doesn’t.

See ya!

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next week!
