Quotes and thoughts on my mind

Hello hello! Once a month, at the end of the month, I would like to make it a habit to share the quotes that were on my mind during the month. I will, of course, include my thoughts on the quote because that’s what makes it fun.

Please continue reading below for my August quotes and thoughts!

I’ll shut myself off from everyone to the point of insensibility. Make an enemy of everyone, speak to no one.

Franz Kafka

I fear my immediate reaction to a negative emotion is to retreat into myself and interact with no one, which is sooooo fun! However, it doesn’t ever make me feel any better. I really just want connection, but my brain would rather punish myself for wanting.

I am very hard on myself, unnecessarily so. But this quote I found on Pinterest reminds me to be gentler with myself and with others. I can choose to continue instead of letting my anxious thoughts consume me. However, they often do consume me, but afterwards I continue to love, forgive, and grow.

They [the disgustingly educated] collect questions like souvenirs and chase answers like lovers.

I found this quote in a Substack article I read recently, and I loved it. I’ve been trying to be more curious recently by reading articles, watching TED talks, and just in general taking time to consume content that is not just scrolling my phone. Part of being curious is having questions and finding a way to answer them. I think we should all strive to be disgustingly educated; it’s a skill you have to maintain.

Am I suddenly nostalgic for 2 years ago? Maybe, but most importantly, I’m not who I was 2 years ago. I still love the same things and have similar hobbies, but I was also still becoming who I wanted to be. I think I’ll always still be becoming who I want to be, but I’m closer today than I was then. I moved out of my parents’ house about 2 years ago and began creating my own life. That was a huge accomplishment for me! And I started my MBA two years ago, which I’ll finally complete soon!

This land is not resting on earth but on callused hands of workers

Annabhau Sathe

I was listening to a TED talk called “A path to social safety for migrant workers” by Ashif Shaikh on my way to work earlier this week. He was speaking on the struggles migrant workers face in India and across Asia. One of the migrants that Shaikh helped through his organization shared this quote by the poet Annabhau Sathe. It reminded me of the way this administration is treating the immigrant workers who carry this country. The US and economies across the world wouldn’t be where they are without the hardworking people who make them function. You can find the TED talk here.

I don’t have anything to add to this one except I found it on Instagram, and it’s true!

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives

Annie Dillard

I will leave you all with this last quote I came across on TikTok. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life as a shell of a person, or look back in 50 years and regret not doing something. I want to look back at a life well spent, and that starts with a day well spent.
