How to romanticize life

Learning to find the joy in life

The mundane doesn’t need to be boring, and I’ll never let it. It might be slightly delusional to think that my life is a rom-com because I’m obviously not Anne Hathaway or Kate Hudson. But it does make life more fun.

Being a little delusional in life, careers, school, and dating makes things more fun. I’m not a boring person and I refuse to let life take the light out of my life. I can’t transform my life into a rom-com, but I can do things that bring me joy and make daily life more joyful.

Here’s how I romanticize my life to do exactly that:

Playlists

I like to make playlists that fit certain vibes. Music can transport me no matter what I’m doing, whether it's seasons, moods, or environments. I have a playlist of songs I’ve heard in rom-coms. I have seasonal playlists for winter, summer, fall, and spring. I even make a playlist for every month with songs that I listened to in that month. I have so many memories and feelings associated with music that help me step into a different version of myself. It’s also super fun! Pick a vibe, aesthetic, mood, or season, and curate a playlist that encapsulates that feeling. You might just feel like you’re in a movie.

Vision boards

I love making vision boards for goals but also to shift the energy in my life. I can use pictures to create the life that I want. I make vision boards at the start of each year and it allows me to be idealistic with my goals. I love being creative, so taking time to make a vision board allows me to dive into that side of me. I also make vision boards throughout the year when I need to get out of a rut or I’m feeling stuck. Being creative in any way forces me to stop worrying and stressing and be in the moment. That’s why vision boards are so fun!

Setting the mood

I like to set the mood for any activity. This can be setting my desk up for work, lighting a candle before starting lecture videos, or making a coffee before starting a difficult task. Setting the mood means creating an environment where you feel comfortable. It can also help to signify shifts within your day. When I set up for work, I know that it’s time to focus. When I light a candle, I know it’s time to take notes. It makes doing what I need to do more enjoyable. And for me, having ADHD makes it hard for me to shift from one thing to another. Using these signals helps trick my brain into moving from one thing to another.

Trying new things

This is a big one! Trying new things always makes me feel like I’m in a movie montage where the main character begins learning something new. Recently I picked up pickleball and it’s so fun! I also try new drinks, new foods, new clothes, new dates, and new locations. I used to be afraid to try new things because what if I hated it or wasn’t good at it. But the worst thing that can happen is I don’t like it. I never have to try it again. Bad date? I never have to see that person again. Jeans don’t fit how you thought? Return them or give them away to a friend. Nothing has to be permanent which is why it’s called trying, and it makes life more interesting.

Solo dates

Spending time with yourself can be fun! Rebrand solitude as a time to date yourself. Take yourself out to a movie you’ve been wanting to see, or a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try. Just because someone can’t join me, doesn’t mean it won’t be fun. If other people love being around me, then I can also love being around me.

Hope you’ll join me in being a little delusional <3
